The Suzaku Seishi disappear into the red portal with their Miko, leaving Tamahome, Yui and Nakago looking after them. Miaka, still stunned by what her beloved has done to Tasuki, who was only trying to protect her, realizes that he is not and never again will be, her Tamahome. As they fade from view she whispers "Goodbye..." endlessly, saying farewell forever to the thing the one she loved has become. Yui and Nakago turn away from the portal to face Tamahome and see tears streaming down his face. Yui whispers his name incredulously, and he replies that he has no idea why he is crying none at all yet the tears won't stop. As the episode draws to a close Tamahome's tear-streaked face is in focus while Miaka whispers "Sayonara, Tamahome..."
