Volume: # 5
Episode: # 20

After escaping from the dungeon, Miaka decides that Tamahome must be under some kind of spell, but maybe if she shows him the note he left her he'll remember her and their love. So she ties Tasuki up and races back to the promised meeting place, hoping he'll show. She waits beneath the tree only briefly, growing faint from blood loss, until he arrives. He embraces her and apologises both for what he said and for breaking her arm; it was necessary in order to deceive the Seiryuu people. As she sobs her relief, he asks if she brought Tasuki with her when she came for him. This takes a moment to sink in, but Miaka pulls away realising that there's no way he could know that he's NEVER met him. She tells him he's not her Tamahome, and asks if he remembers her at all. When he just looks at her she pulls out the note and gives it to him, begging him to remember her and their love. He takes the note and repeats the last part softly, "Wo ai ni..." looking up he asks, "I wrote this?" At her affirmative, he raises the letter before him and slowly tears it in two. As the sound repeats, we see Miaka's image ripped in two, with closer and closer shots, as all the while Tamahome rips the note to shreds and scatters it across the clearing; she drops to her knees in pain.
