Miaka lies on a bed, in excruciating pain due to her illness. Having been told the only way to free her from the pain, and knowing that the means to raise her again are at hand, Hotohori accedes to Miaka's request that he kill her. He asks that the others leave the room, and then kneels at her
bedside. She shakily requests that he impale her, because she loves yukitori, a type of shishkebab. When he hesitates, she smiles at him and says that it's all right-- she'll be back soon, and right now she's in no shape to find the other seishi. Besides, it hurts so much... As he raises his sword, the focus switches to outside the door where all are gathered, listening intently for the fatal blow. A loud thud is heard and the focus returns to Miaka's bedside to see the sword
quivering where it is embedded in the side of the bed. When Miaka almost angrily demands to know why he didn't finish it, he asks, almost in tears, if she could kill one she loved? When she is silent, he asks her to try to hold on, that even if it's a long shot, they should try to get Myojuan's help first. She agrees, and promises to try for him.
